This Month’s Spotlight

By Beth King

Touch of Fate by Christine Amsden

From the cover of the book: “Marianne has long been able to predict the future, but is powerless to alter its course.  When her daughter inherits her dreaded power, she decides to make a change and move across the country.  To her surprise and delight, she discovers that she is not alone – five new friends have similar abilities.  Then Marianne finds one of those friends murdered.  With the help of Detective Richards, she must find the murderer before the murderer finds her.”

Some books you read because their covers call to you from the bookstore/library shelf.  Some books you read because they are recommended.  There are hundreds of reasons to read a particular book.  My reason for reading Touch of Fate was primarily to write this review for our newsletter.  I read a lot of paranormal, romance, and fantasy, so I was looking forward to reading Christine Amsden’s first book.  I wasn’t disappointed.

Touch of Fate is about a woman with paranormal powers, but it is also about a woman searching for answers that her powers won’t reveal to her.  Feeling out of control, searching for signs, guiding Gabrielle, her teen-age daughter, through her first powerful experiences of prediction, Marianne struggles to cope with everything going on around her.  She fears her talent, when ignoring the signs seems to cause more trouble for her.  She searches for ways to thwart her predictions, ignoring her own Grandmother’s warnings that to do so is not possible.

How Marianne becomes embroiled in murder and becomes the murderer’s next target is an engaging story.  Ms. Amsden’s characters are interesting enough that the reader will want to know more about each one.  The journey Marianne undertakes to accept her “gift” and take control of her life is what I found most compelling.

Christine Amsden’s first book is appealing on several levels.  Her style is straightforward story telling with believable characters and a plot that keeps you involved to the end.

Don’t forget our book-signing event August 2, Christine Amsden and

Jeffrey Leever will be here from noon to 2:00 p.m.
