The Uncommon Reader

By

Alan Bennett

This book was the August Reading Group selection.  Without that little push, I may never have picked up this gem.  If you choose a book by the number of pages and enjoy the big thick ones, you might miss this one on the book shelf.  Alan Bennett, British dramatist, first came to attention in this country with the success of Beyond the Fringe, in the 1960s.  His work includes the Talking Heads television series and his most recent play, The History Boys, won six Tony Awards, including Best Play, in 2006.  His humor is showcased in this novella about the Queen of England and what happens when she discovers books in a bookmobile parked outside the palace kitchen.

Obviously, the Queen knows about books but reading for pleasure is a whole new occupation for her.  Once she discovers the joy of reading, her time is filled with books of all kinds.  Her reading leads her through fiction, philosophy, poetry, from the classics through current writers she’s met but never paid a lot attention.  Reading changes her priorities and her interactions with staff and subjects.  As her world view changes, she begins to question the establishment and that leads to unexpected consequences within the palace walls and throughout the country.

This is a quick read, 120 pages, but it packs a wallop with quirky characters and precise jabs at protocol and expectations.  The book is warm and funny and thought provoking.  Above all it made me very grateful that I have the opportunity to read and reinforced my belief that life without books would be a barren waste of time.
